Why do Ellevill AS produce their products in India?
By definition, India is a democracy. Despite this, the community consists of large social and cultural differences.
The factory that produces goods for Ellevill.com is concerned with human dignity and justice. They have more than 30 years of experience in textile production and therefore have good knowledge to be able to give workers the best working conditions. All of the workers have the same conditions. By following the strict international standards that are set in relation to production, this gives workers a fair treatment both in terms of salary, working hours and environmental aspects. That means that our products are the result of fair trade. Our products will in future be marked with a picture and a text from the weaver who made the product, as a small greeting to you as a customer.
PRICES
A dime here and a penny there ... We are happy to pay more for our goods if we can help contribute in a positive direction. Production of textiles in this way is more expensive and therefore makes our goods more expensive. That means lower profits and higher prices. We still strive to put us at a cost that fits the market. It is important to us that we have a product we can be proud of instead of having the best possible profit.
FUND
We want to give something back to those who actually do the job for us. Therefore, the factory created a fund that pays out money to the workers if they should need it out of the ordinary. It can be anything from giving support to the simple tools at home to build a house if it was needed. For each wrap we sell, a sum goes to this fund.
SCHOOLS
Our products are manufactured in factories that have their own weaving schools. These schools are established for workers to increase knowledge and competence. Increased knowledge contributes to independence and confidence. The factory buys the weave so that workers can sit to produce products in their own homes. This means that workers do not have long travel paths, and can control their own working hours. More time means that families can spend more time together. In addition to weaving schools, the factory also offers schooling for all children of the employees. If the children are offered education it helps plant knowledge of several generations, so they are better equipped against poverty, and in the future they can work and earn their own money.
PRODUCTION
Production from raw material to result is carefully planned. It is used natural AZO-free and environmentally friendly color in the production for both environmental and health considerations. Our products also undergo the necessary tests in order to get the Eco-Tex standard 100 approval. This is a demanding process that we envisage can be approved during 2010.
Hand Weaving Our products may contain irregularities that in no way be confused with flaws. Dyeing of cotton threads are made both by hand and with machines and can therefore get some color differences if thread is used from two different color tubs. This can occur when the job is done by humans and not machines. For us it is important that workers are having jobs and not the fact that the product stands out as perfect. Irregularities may also occur in the actual weaving. Each line is manually pulled from one side to the loom to the other and it will be different pressure every time weaver tightens. This means that there may be differences in the weave. This is a natural part of the art it of creating hand-woven products. Why are there knots in my wrap? “The weavers knot” is sometimes said to be the smallest and tightest knot that it is possible to make. It is used for fastening broken wrap threads together on thousands of looms throughout the world. It cannot be untied easily, once it has been tightened. This is an art in itself and essential for the work to be beautiful.
Lose ends and broken threads? It may seem like a lose end or a broken thread, but in most cases it is just the weaver who forgot to cut the thread. You can therefore safely cut the thread without the danger of the wrap tearing.
Power looms Although this loom is machine, it is still operated by humans. The process of weaving becomes smoother, but it can still occur similar small irregulations just like the hand-woven wraps such as knots, etc. We believe that our products should be unique, and therefore we will choose this form of production rather than to mass-produce goods without charm.
Auto looms is an automatic loom that produces thousands of meters textile without any weavers present. This is used for very large productions.
